St Dalmas de Tende to Briel sur Roya

This was a long day... the early, early train to Briel sur Roya, only to miss the connecting train by 30 seconds and losing 1.5hrs of time in a rapidly shrinking Fall day, but I did make it on to St Dalmas and then all the walk back on foot, with about 5 min to spare. This completed the "Big Hike" (in segments) from Tende to Nice. It was a pretty nice day, but the amount of visible snow told me that I was at the end of my comfort / safety zone for the year...

Fontan, gateway to Saorge for me... and my last stretch of level ground for awhile... IMG_5703.JPG IMG_5705.JPG IMG_5708.JPG
IMG_5709.JPG Heading up to Saorge... this sucked, about 1200ft of "up".
IMG_5713.JPG But a nice view of Fontan when you get there. I really enjoy the fact that when you "move" here you can see where you have been... contributes to a sense of accomplishment and makes you feel big and small at the same time.
Coming down into picturesque Saorge IMG_5730.JPG IMG_5740.JPG
IMG_5747.JPG Ok, this town wants it's picture taken.
IMG_5757.JPG This is the Madone de Poggio, according to the Green Guide, it is the oldest Christian building in the Roya valley.

IMG_5769.JPG All the way down again... neato new tunnel construction.
IMG_5772.JPG Very cool remains of an aqua duct system over a green pond.

A couple looks back at Saorge... it is just to the left of the tip of the sign. IMG_5778.JPG IMG_5780.JPG
IMG_5783.JPG Getting cold, getting dark,
IMG_5785.JPG Uh, don't know...
IMG_5786.JPG Looking down into Breil sur Roya... had no more time to take pics as I really had to hoof it to make the last train to Nice, otherwise it would be back through Italy and Ventimigglia again...
